Graphic portraits Artemisia vulgaris L. - drawings / paintings / sketches / photographs
Within the analysis of source texts, scientific publications and research results of the "Artemisia vulgaris project", images of this plant have often appeared, starting from ancient sources. Until the mid-19th century, when photography appeared in print, the reproduction of graphic portraits created by hand was the basis for the visualisation of printed works. From today's perspective, illustrations of this kind provide a great many clues to assess the level of scientific development of their era. An excellent example of such a scientific-development-illustration is the title page of Simon Syrenius "Herbarium" from 1613, which shows a map of the world as it was then known (Illustration 14). The images of mugwort included below were intended (and still are) to assist a reader in identifying the correct species.
Presenting such a wide selection of graphic portraits of Artemisia vulgaris L. often from unique sources, was made possible primarily by their digital archiving in scientific libraries and data banks and their online availability.
NOTE: Illustrations 3 and 4 were not included in the originally analysed materials and are not included in the dissertation.
