Czym jest integracyjny portret terapeutyczny rośliny leczniczej – czego dotyczy integracja i jakie są jej składowe?

What is an integrative therapeutic portrait of a medicinal plant - what does the integration refer to and what are its components?

The integrative therapeutic portrait of a medicinal plant collects, contains and combines information from various written sources relating to its healing medicinal qualities, into a given whole. In the case of mugwort, this information, due to the structure of its historical transmission, has been analysed not only from a medical perspective (indications, nosology, therapy), but also from a philosophical and cultural one (holism/materialism - role of the therapist, organisation of therapy in different medical systems), as well as from a spiritual (monotheism/polytheism, role of deities).

Due to the resulting diversity of information, the main difficulty in creating such a portrait is to integrate the obtained information obtained around the predefined research problem set. A way of such integration is to organise them according to the preset (most important) characteristics. It should be noted that the original set of characteristics can be revised in the course of acquiring information, if the conclusions of the analysis so far require such a revision. For the same reason, further (new) features may be added to the integration portrait.

Components of an integrative therapeutic portrait of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.)

  1. Historical analysis of the documented therapeutic properties of this plant [predefined component].
  2. Analysis of the therapeutic qualities of this species from the point of view of holistic medicine
NOTE: This component was added to the portrait due to the amount and importance of information obtained on this subject in historical sources (up to the end of the 18th century).
  3. TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) as an example of a contemporary system of holistic medicine, the guidelines of which have been applied in describing the therapeutic actions of A. vulgaris L.
NOTE: This component has been added to the portrait due to the need to update the nomenclature (vocabulary & medical phrases) of holistic medicine to 21st century philological standards.
  4. Discussion of the current position of A. vulgaris in pharmacy and in medicine according to the principles of EBM (evidence-based medicine/MATERIALISTIC medicine), taking into account the latest documented and published scientific research [predefined component]
  5. Presentation of the gaps in the therapeutic spectrum of mugwort created by the divergence of the two medical systems: holistic and materialistic (from the 19th century onwards), and the possibility of filling/closing them with the help of current knowledge about this plant, in both systems mentioned. Selected problems of comparative analysis between EBM and TCM have been discussed on this occasion.
NOTE: This component was added to the portrait because of the need to present the differences in the nosology (classification of diseases and their description) in two medical systems: holistic and materialistic ones.
  6. A description of challenges faced by today's researchers of this plant, especially concerning the verification by professional research methods of its oldest described uses - in the treatment of perianal (gynaecological) and gastroenterological ailments [predefined component].
NOTE: this component has been modified due to the emergence of a substantively important aspect of holistic medicine within the historical analysis.
  7. Two main tables: Table A oraz Table B. These tables present the components of the therapeutic integrative portrait of mugwort in graphically simplified and abbreviated form. [component predefined, repeatedly upgraded as research was progressing].
  8. Presentation (PowerPoint). Multimedia version of doctoral dissertation the written and defended within the framework of the "Artemisia vulgaris project"(dissertation available in Polish only) [predefined component].
